Inspired by the Pont Neuf in Paris. The arches of the Pont Neuf were too heavy to be transferred to Amsterdam. The bridge would then sink into the mud, so shorter arches were chosen. What did come to Amsterdam are the sturdy bridge piers, needed in Paris to keep ice floes off the bridge in the fast-flowing Seine, but useless in the slow-flowing Amstel. The bridge was opened in 1883.
